Vermont's Waterbury Dog Park inspires two others to tackle dog poo composting

Updated: May 17

In September 2022 the Warren Select Board approved a plan for Warren Dog Park at Brooks Recreation Field. The project committee's well-thought-out plan received a grant that will match funds raised by crowd sourcing. Phase 1 includes fencing, shade, gates, a play area, signage and a dog waste system. Warren isn't the first Vermont community to include sustainable waste management in its dog park plans. In fact, the committee is proposing composting system like the one used at the Waterbury dog park, which relies on pooper scoopers throughout the park with centralized receptacles for collecting the waste.

Central Vermont’s upscale Waterbury Dog Park on River Road, which opened with a “Leash-Cutting” Ceremony in 2015, was also constructed with grants, crowd-sourcing campaigns and special events hosted by Waterbury Unleashed. In addition to its many amenities, the park utilises an environmentally-friendly pet waste compost system with several buried compost bins around the park.

Planning for Morristown Dog Park was jump started in 2019 by an 11-year-old student who saw the Waterbury Dog Park while playing soccer nearby. She formed a dog park committee that received a grant and permission from the Morristown Selectboard to use the piece of land at the intersection of Park Street and Copley Avenue. Fencing was installed in late fall 2020 just in time for the opening ceremony. The committee planned to finish the project the following summer by installing doggie play structures, composting waste systems, and a water spigot.
