Denali Park The sled dogs in the Denali National Park kennels produce up to 50 pounds of poo a day. In 1980, the kennels staff established a dog waste composting program was established using a four-bin system. Finished compost is used as a source of nutrients for park plants. The program operates to this day.

Fairbanks One of the earliest studies into composting dog waste began in 1991 to evaluate the possibility of composting dog waste in northern climates. The study was supported by Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District, with technical assistance from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service with sled dogs and kennel operators. Here’s the fact sheet.
